I've just sent a message to government leaders urging a strong ban on cluster bombs. I hope you'll join me. Here's the link:

And here's more info from Avaaz.org:
Final negotiations are underway right now in Dublin, Ireland on a treaty to ban cluster bombs -- but its outcome is in danger.
Cluster munitions don't just kill during war--they scatter small, unexploded "bomblets" on the ground. When children pick them up, they are often maimed or killed. Most governments agree that they should be banned--but many are now trying to weaken the proposed treaty with loopholes, exemptions, and delays.
Negotiations end this Thursday. If enough of us raise our voices, we can drown out the arms manufacturers and convince our governments to do the right thing.

Weekly Meetings
Due to low attendance at meetings its been hard to organise the group. I know some of you are currently over committed to Shakespeare and Sport so we thought we'd try moving the day to Monday... starting this week.
See you there.
See you there.
Freedom Challenge #1
With the Freedom challange week coming up we have already had a couple of meetings to discuss possible ideas.
What is Freedom Week?
Freedom Challenge is a team-based challenge for NZ youth to
take action for human rights. Your mission is to hold an event in
support of our Freedom Challenge campaign to raise money and awareness
and to recruit people to Amnesty and your group.
Some ideas floated so far include:
Holding a consciousness day on the first Monday:
website www.freedomchallenge.org.nz is due for launch soon, and will feature more info on this year's theme and your two human rights defenders. This year we also have a Freedom Challenge facebook page - visit www.facebook.com and search for Freedom Challenge 2008, and a Freedom Challenge bebo page - http://www.bebo.com/FreedomC10
Keep up the good work.
